I am pleased to feature Mr. Sunnyside: Imagination by CK Gregory as the first book review in this newly launched category. As I’ve mentioned before, “Inspired Foodery” consists of anything that nourishes the mind, body or soul. What better to nourish the mind than with a good book. I admit, I have had very little time to devour a good book these days but hopefully that’s about to change.
Kicking things off…Mr. Sunnyside is a charming, easy-to-read children’s story about a bored little boy and his imaginary friend who happens to be an egg! It’s been quite some time since I’ve read a children’s book. However, I’ve always been extremely fond of humpty dumpty, so I was intrigued to learn more about this new egg in town.
The story begins with young Tommy staring out the window on a rainy day. Tommy is bored with his toys. He still wants to go out and play in the rain, however his mom insists he stay indoors. Frustration pushes Tommy’s imagination into high gear, bringing Mr. Sunnyside to life. This is one cool, skateboarding egg that teaches Tommy how fun it can be to use his imagination. After their adventure, Tommy is no longer sad and bored. Mr. Sunnyside’s work is done and poof, he’s gone. Then Tommy’s mom serves him eggs for breakfast, which might be a little disturbing lol. But as the book says, “The End (for now).”
I really liked how the first two pages of illustrations were in grayscale to emphasize Tommy’s gloomy perspective. Once Mr. Sunnyside appears to colorize Tommy’s day so do the illustrations come alive with vibrant colors. It’s the small details, along with “eggcellent” wordplay, that can be appreciated by adults as well.
Written for ages 5 to 10, author CK Gregory is putting out an important message by showing young audiences that there are endless possibilities with the power of imagination. This is a refreshing message in an age where kids can use a cell phone before they can walk! Children’s author is a new career title for Gregory, whose prior work involved theater and the media. Mr. Sunnyside: Imagination is the first book in what looks to be a promising new series of “eggciting” adventures to come! Frankly, I cannot wait to meet Scrambaline…just saying.

This is a very enjoyable book! It can be a “read -to” book, in addition to having a child read it themselves.
