Each year on the 13th of August, it is deemed the national day to celebrate everyone’s favorite cut of beef (well at least mine for sure). In case you were wondering, filet mignon is actually French for “cute filet” or “dainty filet”.
Nowadays, it seems every food and its lesser known cousin has a national “day”. I have to admit that I actually do love when I find out there is a celebratory occasion for a food I enjoy. Even more so, I adore coinciding that day’s menu with the featured food. Needless to say, I will be paying homage to as many of these national food days as possible throughout this blog. Now let’s take a look at a delicious, tried & true recipe you too can make at home to celebrate…
The first step is to start with fresh, lean filet mignons. I always find beautiful center cut steaks at Trader Joe’s. Oh, I haven’t yet mentioned my fondness for Trader Joe’s, but more on that in future blogs. So anyway…
The following recipe is a brilliant way to utilize today’s celebratory meat. The tender chunks of filet melt in your mouth while bursting with flavor. It only takes a handful of ingredients to create a tasty main course. The mushrooms are a lovely addition, but if you are not a fan of the fungi, just omit.
Sautéed Filet Mignon with Mushrooms
Notes
- Marinating the meat overnight makes it outstandingly flavorful, moist and delicious. However, if you are short for time, marinating for at least 2 hours will still produce delicious results.
Ingredients
- 2 pounds filet mignon
- 3 cloves garlic, chopped
- ¼ tsp. salt
- ¼ tsp. ground black pepper
- 1 tbsp. sugar
- 2 tbsp. soy sauce
- 6 tbsp. olive oil
- 1 8 oz. package baby bella mushrooms, sliced
Instructions
- Trim filet mignon of all excess fat, making it as lean as possible; cut into cubes.
- In medium bowl, combine garlic, salt, pepper, sugar, soy sauce and 4 tablespoons of olive oil. Add beef to bowl, mixing to coat. Cover and refrigerate minimum 2 hours or overnight.
- When ready to eat, in large skillet, heat remaining olive oil. Sauté mushrooms until they begin to soften, about 6 minutes. Push mushrooms to the sides of pan, making room in center.
- Place filet mignon in center of pan. Cook, turning often, until meat reaches desired doneness, and mushrooms are tender. Enjoy!
